Tetris Wouldn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category Might Solve This

Whenever a major prize-giving event approaches, one notices a demand for the addition of new categories to acknowledge unsung work and satisfy the passions of fans with niche passions.

My colleague made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are tabletop games, this being a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal stands as crucial and important of all. The demand is this: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and it will always spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that cinema institutions avoid this approach. But it is an unavoidable compromise within the realm of video games, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute as a single art form.

For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Existing Game Classification System

The major gaming awards currently feature classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these six categories successfully include numerous genres, and you can find room for numerous titles.

Not so for logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to put them. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, each quite distinct: building puzzles in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Which classification works between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

The Representation Problem

Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games released every year without proper recognition in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive Indie races.

  • A renowned logic title received no recognition in any category in 2014
  • Another creative title received no nominations during that ceremony
  • Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment that year
  • Only a few logic titles managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent small games, however the design in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among most popular titles worldwide continuing this trend for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience competes with famous sandbox experiences claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. It would be easy to populate five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

To emphasize again, these represent titles that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers operate at the demanding boundary interactive creation, developing some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay decades.
