An Generosity of Unknown Individuals: How a Gentleman I Had Just Met Supported Me Land the Job That Altered My Path

During the final years of the 1980s, I was beginning a budget travel adventure to Europe with a companion. Because my companion was considering pursuing a master’s degree in the Big Apple, we had arranged a 14-day stopover there on the way to London.

We got to the student accommodation, a big multi-story edifice on the Upper West Side called International House. Setting down our luggage, we headed straight to the canteen, where we picked up meals, sat down, and began chatting with other diners.

Sitting next to me was an Iraqi man enrolled in an engineering program at an Ivy League institution. He inquired what I my profession was, and I explained that I had just graduated with a degree in science and had been conducting research involving microscopic analysis.

He noted that there was an microscopy facility at Columbia University – adjacent to the engineering faculty, which was why he was aware of it. He recommended that I consider applying for a job with them. I laughed it off, telling him that I was soon departing to Europe and, even more importantly, I didn’t have a US visa.

The following day I went out exploring, returning to the canteen that after dark. The engineering student walked over to me and told me that he had organized a discussion for me with the head of the electron microscope unit at Columbia. Since he had taken the effort, I showed up for the discussion – but straight off told my interviewer that I was without a work permit, so I was unable to accept the role.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a place where everything seems achievable – she said: “We'll handle it. When can you start?” I never got on that flight to London.

I was employed there for 36 months. One of the benefits was that I was granted complimentary education at Columbia, and I seized the chance to complete a master’s of international affairs.

I lost touch with him and I am unaware of his full name, but his incredible act of kindness altered my destiny in multiple respects. I would never have had the confidence or nerve to reach out at an Ivy League university and request employment. Additionally, I had always wanted to study abroad, but wouldn't have been able to pay for it without that educational benefit.

Critically, that role at the university paved the way for a job in Zurich where I met my wonderful partner, with whom I currently share four amazing children. This was a pivotal life event. That helpful person redirected my path in life, and I’m always appreciative.
